Nowadays, the number of domestic university graduates is increasing sharply, the employment situation is grim, the national economic ability promotes generally and the studying policy on China is open than before. China’s overseas study market has been changed from the past "reason to study generation "into today’s "popular study generation" rapidly. Overseas education is an important content and part of higher education, and has become a global trend. In recent years, as the world’s biggest exporter of foreign students, the quantity of Chinese students studying abroad shows a rising trend, and the number of students studying abroad at their own expense accounted for more than90%of the total number, and it will keep on growing. Therefore, based on the development and policy of China’s overseas education work, it is necessary to study motivation of contemporary Chinese students studying abroad and the conditions of their formation. It will promote Chinese education work development healthy and orderly.In this paper, the writer uses sociological theory to study12college students studying abroad who are studying at their own expense. The purpose is to find out the motivation and formation conditions of Chinese contemporary college students studying abroad at their own expense. In this research, the motivation of Chinese contemporary college students studying abroad at their own expense can be summarized in four aspects that are the learning level, life level, job level, and individual level. And the characteristics of study motivation are complexity, diversity, blindness, and development. In addition, the formation of study motivation is also influenced by the social environment factors, such as the government, colleges, society, intermediary organizations and other stakeholders. The result of the study is that, the demand of Chinese contemporary college students study motivations at their own expense is excess and different.The first chapter is introduction. Firstly, the writer introduced the research background and the significance of the research, and the core of this paper is to study the motivation of Chinese contemporary college students at their own expense and the forming conditions. Secondly, the writer summarized foreign and domestic overseas education literature. Thirdly, the writer introduced the analysis method of this research, the selection of survey, and arrangement of data. Finally, the writer illustrated the logical frame and innovation points of this study.The second chapter is the related concepts and theoretical introduction. Firstly, the writer introduced definitions of "students studying abroad at their own expense "and "motivation". Secondly, the writer introduced the use of the related theories, which including the theory of human capital theory, social learning theory, social exchange theory. These theories will be used for studying the motivation of Chinese college students study in the below.The third chapter is the motivation analysis of Chinese contemporary college students studying at their own expense. Through the investigation and interview, the author found that the reasons why students choose to study abroad are not identical. The motivations of Chinese contemporary college students studying at their own expense are summarized in four aspects:the learning level--to receive better education; the life level--to enjoy the foreign environment, and to promote the individuals; the working level--to avoid the domestic employment pressure, to achieve the occupation ideal; the individual level--effects on personnel and external environment. In the four aspects of motivations, there are some detailed division, such as be interested in foreign education mode, to learn more professional and practical knowledge and skills, to enjoy the rich educational resources, to shape a sound personality, to broad their horizons in life experience, to improve employment or business strength, to achieve recognition and so on.The fourth chapter is to analysis the motive condition of Chinese contemporary college students studying at their own expense. The author thinks that motivation is a kind of individual behavior, which is influenced by various social factors. Therefore, the motive formation of Chinese contemporary college students studying abroad at their own expense, is not only based on the students’group behavior, but also influenced by the national political policies, social development, economic progress and other factors. Through macro information of Chinese contemporary college students, this paper summarized the motive formation conditions as the following seven points:one is the opening China’s studying abroad policy; two is the rapid development of international education; three is the Chinese economic growth; four is the rapidly increasing needs of education; five is the overseas college for survival; the six is the development of science and technology rapidly; seven is the huge profits in the overseas education industry.The fifth chapter is the conclusion and suggestions. This chapter summarized the motivation of Chinese students studying abroad at their own expense, pointed out that the situation of Chinese students studying abroad was excess and differences in demand. Therefore, colleges and universities, the education department and other related aspects should attach great importance to study motivation of contemporary college students studying abroad, and take appropriate measures to solve the problems.
