With the rapid development of computers and modern teaching technology, the multimediaComputer Assisted Instruction(CAI) becomes the most popular way of teaching. The properapplication of CAI can fill our class with energy and enrich teaching content. Besides, it mayencourage the learning interests of students and then improve the teaching quality. However, ifit’s not used properly, it is not a good promotion but a block for the teaching activity. Thus, howto use CAI and how to deal with the relationship between CAI and traditional teaching method isa new issue. To explore this field, the author designs one experiment, including some analysesand discussions in reference to this issue. According to the results, the author keeps a positiveattitude to the CAI. In the meantime, the thesis gives an objective description of theshortcomings of CAI and some counter measures to improve the quality of teaching in the future. The thesis mainly focuses on the following issues: Whether the CAI in English teaching canimprove the students’ learning effects from all aspects or not; What are the problems arising fromteachers’ CAI practical application; What are the shortcomings in the process of using CAI andhow shall we deal with these problems? The experiment has been carried out with senior twostudents in Qing Zhou No.3Middle school. There are both50students in these two classes.Among them, class5belongs to the controlled group, which still uses the traditional teachingmethod, and class6belongs to the experimental group, which adopts CAI in English teaching. They have similar language level and are taught by the same English teacher in the experiment. There are questionnaires for students and teachers and two pieces of test paper for students. Inthe end, date collection can be made. The study finds that CAI teaching is good to improving learning efficiency in senior schools. But there are still some shortcomings in the application. For example, because of too muchinformation input, students are hard to get the hang of important and difficult points; Someteachers lack computers’ theories. They are not familiar with courseware production skill, eventhe computers’ application, which decreases the chances of communication among teachers andstudents. After finding out the reasons for leading to these shortcomings, the thesis tries to putforward some counter measures. First, schools should pay more attention to the teachers’computers application and their own professional qualities, such as courseware production skill. The leaders of school make a certain regulation to evaluate every teacher, especially its practicalapplication. Second, teachers must combine the CAI with the traditional teaching method. By this way, teachers can choose some key and difficult points from teaching content to decline thenull information input. Certainly, as for teachers, they have to preview the teaching standard andoutline carefully. There is no best medium and only the most appropriate medium in our teachingactivity. Only by realizing this point can they stimulate the class successfully. The last but notleast, our teachers should place emphasis on communication in their teaching process. It’simportant to learn how to communicate with others for English study. Therefore, don’t putmultimedia in the first place. Students should be put in the dominant position, while our teachersshall learn to be a leader in the class. Students could learn to study well by their exploration andcooperation.
