With the rapid popularization of information technology and thedevelopment of multimedia, many schools in the cities of China except somein remote places adopt multimedia technology to assist foreign languageteaching. In recent years, multimedia-assisted English teaching has alreadybecome a research project that a lot of experts study as a focus of languagestudy. Many studies prove that multimedia-assisted teaching plays an activepart in improving the effect of language learning and can benefit students byproviding a vivid learning surrounding for English learners.There are many studies and researches on a number of aspects ofmultimedia-assisted English teaching, but the investigation is mostly orientedto a certain area or a certain group of subjects So they may not fully reflectthe current situation of multimedia-assisted English Teaching in WuhaiNo.1Middle School of Inner Mongolia, the school where the author of thethesis is teaching. The installation of multimedia equipment for teachingpurposes was completed by the end of2007. The school authority calls onevery teacher to use it in teaching. However, for some reasons three-fourths ofthe devices stay there idle. This research investigates the situation of applying multimedia-assisted teaching in Senior1of Wuhai No.1Middle School withthe aim of identifying problems and seeking solutions for the improvement ofteaching effect.The subjects are students and teachers in Senior1of Wuhai No.1MiddleSchool. The research instruments are questionnaire, classroom observationand interviews. The results of the survey reveal that most teachers andstudents of Senior1in Wuhai No.1Middle School hold a positive attitude tomultimedia-assisted English Teaching; the utilization of multimedia resourceshas a significant effect. However, there are still many problems which lead toequipment idle, which has been neglected by many English teachers. Themajority of teachers seem to have little knowledge about constructivist theory.There are still many deficiencies in the use and maintenance of equipment.From the results of the survey and data analysis, the followingconclusions are drawn: the school should provide more modern educationaltechnology training opportunities for teachers to improve the theoretical leveland operation of multimedia teaching. Professional English teachers shouldcontinue to update the knowledge of their multimedia English teaching; tostrengthen cooperation between teachers in order to improve the quality ofMultimedia Assisted English Teaching; to optimize the design of courseware;to strengthen the equipment management; to building up a coursewaredatabase and to train students to use rich multimedia resources to raise theirlearning interest and efficiency.
