The dramatic development of information technology encourages multimedia to be widely applied in classroom instruction, especially in foreign language teaching, and its importance as a new means of teaching has been widely recognized. However, in the practical application of multimedia-assisted instruction (MAI) in English teaching, there emerge some problems, which are in need of deep research.Based on the theories of constructivism and multiple intelligences, the author adopted questionnaires and interviews as the main research means to carry on a case study in Haiwan Junior High School, Shenzhen. It attempts to explore the problems embeded in the MAI in Haiwan Junior High School in terms of interaction, learning environment and teaching efficiency.Through the case study, the author explored the possible causes involved and found out that multimedia-assisted English teaching in junior high school does contribute a lot to the improvement of teaching efficiency, but there still exist some problems in the aspects of classroom interaction, learning environment and teaching efficiency. For example, the multimedia-assisted English class, to a certain extent, still focus on the information transmission rather than providing authentic language learning context.Through the reflection on the practical application of MAI, the author put forward some suggestions on how to carry out the classroom teaching in the multimedia environment for the optimization of multimedia-assisted English class. Such as providing students enough interactive space with the assistance of multimedia and integrating the advantages of MAI with those of the traditional teaching methods. The present research is far from perfect and it is still in need of some improvement. In spite of the findings and implications, there are some limitations in which we can make further research. For example, the further research can put more concentration on students’psychology under the multimedia learning environment. The thesis consists of six chapters.
