In English learning,English vocabulary has become more and more important in communication and emotion expression.The newly issued Junior School Curriculum Criterion(2011)proposes a higher requirement that Junior Middle School students should master 1600 words,200-300 idioms and fixed collocations.But the low efficiency of English vocabulary learning of the students are not satisfactory.Therefore,culture the ability of using English vocabulary of the students has become an important topic for Junior Middle School English teachers and researchers.The Multimedia-assisted Instruction(MAI)is a student-centered teaching method based on Constructivism learning theory and Metacognitive learning theory.Through multimedia,it displays text,audio,image,animation and video to improve students' vocabulary learning ability.In China,MAI has been widely applied in English teaching which leads to a lot of research results.However,there is a few studies applied to English vocabulary teaching.The article explores the application of MAI in Grade Nine from the following aspects:First,can MAI increase students' interest in English vocabulary learning?Second,will MAI effectively help students to enlarge their English vocabulary size?Third,will MAI improve the students' ability of using English vocabulary?The experiment was conducted in Cuiqiao Junior Middle School in Chengde.68 Grade Nine students from Class 1 and Class 4 were involved in the experiment that lasted for 16 weeks.Class 1 as the experimental class was taught by the teaching method of MAI and,the control class was taught under the traditional teaching approach.The experiment adopted three qualitative and quantitative instruments,that was,interview,questionnaire and test.At last,the relevant data and statistics of the experiment were collected and analyzed by SPSS17.0.The results of the experiment show in the followings: MAI can increase students' interest in English vocabulary learning,and have significant effected on enlarge students' English vocabulary size,and finally can improve students' ability of using English vocabulary to some extent.Generally speaking,Multimedia-assisted instruction is effective and feasible in junior middle school.However,due to the lack of time and experience,there were some defects in the study,which need to be explored and perfected in the future researches.
