With the development of modern society, higher requirements toeducation has been proposed. Every educator should consider the importanceof education reform. As for the English instruction, how to cultivate studentsto be high-quality and all-round developed is a problem to be solved.Inmodern society, the promotion and application of computer technology hasmade a big difference to English classroom teaching and has already beenused in English Instruction widely, pushing on the reform in education.Bork,a computer educator of the U.S.A, predicted in the21st century thatin almost all kinds of schools and subjects, learning interactively by using thecomputers will be the key learning method at the beginning of the21stcentury.As a new type of teaching mode, MAI has powerful functions. The studyof it is of vital importance both in theory and in practice. Nowadays, teachersin junior high schools in China are likely to use MAI when teaching in theclassroom. But when they use MAI in English classroom, some problemscome out. It is used incorrectly and there exists some misunderstanding.Many teachers use the PPT courseware, but in their class, there are inadequateinteractive activities.They choose as much multimedia information as possiblein order to get more visualized and vivid effect neglecting the students’ realneeds.In a word, teachers should not forget the importance of learning interest.It is necessary for them to design appropriate and scientific courseware.In foreign countries, multimedia assisted foreign language teaching hasbeen developing at a fast speed from computer technology to moderninteractive whiteboard technology.In China, relative research on it is alsodeveloping fast in recent years.Through the analysis of the relevant academic literature, it is not difficultto find that there exist some problems during the process of MAI teachingpractice and academic research.In the paper, the writer makes a survey tolearn about the situation of the application of MAI in English classroom injunior high schools.So this research aims to investigate into the situation ofMAI teaching in a rural junior high school.T he survey is carried out in a middle school in Baotou suburbs. There are four research questions. They are:(1)Are the interactive activities adequate or notin the English teaching with MAI?(2)Is the classroom atmosphere active ornot in the English teaching with MAI?(3)Is the students’engagement high ornot in the English teaching with MAI?(4)Is the PPT design good or not in theEnglish teaching with MAI? In addition, some information is collected fromteacher interviewing during which the teachers have expressed their ownopinions on how to apply MAI effectively.After the survey, some suggestionsare provided in order to apply MAI more effectively in the future.Firstly, interactive activities should be enough, and the teacher shoulddesign different activities such as group discussion or pair work. Secondly, itis important for the teacher to know about the students’ needs and interestsand follow the principles of the design of PPT. Thirdly, media materialsshould be chosen properly for effect teaching.At last, the writer pointed out some limitations and recommendations forresearch in the future.
