Grammar teaching has been a controversial subject in senior high school English teaching in China. Should grammar be taught? What is a more proper way of grammar teaching? The author thinks that the senior high school English grammar is not the question whether it is to be taught or not but how to teach it. The reason why the grammar teaching is necessary is that it can help the students get higher marks and improve English comprehensive ability. However, it is one of the most difficult tasks in senoir high English teaching, especially for the rural senior high school teachers. As a teacher in a common senior high school, the author often hears students complain that they aren’t willing to learn grammar; they don’t understand grammar and they don’t know how to learn grammar. Therefore, what kind of method is adapted to the rural senior high school students? Can we find a method to change this situation?An experimental study is conducted in the No2Senior High School of Xifeng where97students from two classes are involved. One of the two classes is the control group; the other is the experimental group. The experiment lasts a semester. Related practice tasks are carried out in the experimental group. The questionnaires and tests are respectively used to test the ability of English grammar learning and comprehensive English competency before and after the study. The results of the comparison of two questionnaires and testing scores between two groups indicate that:1) Discovery learning method can develop the students’ interest in leanring English grammar.2) Discovery Learning Method can develop the students’ ability of autonomous learning and help to improve students’ academic achievement.At the end of this thesis, implications and limitations of the study and suggestions for future study are covered. This thesis tries to combine theories with teaching practice and it also gives a variety of examples, aiming to provide the rural senior high school English teachers with some theory guidance and teaching suggestions. Hopefully, it will be of any help to them.
