English writing, as an effective way to test the results of second language acquisition,has aroused general concern. So does the negative pragmatic transfer in English writing. Itsinfluence on English writing involves various aspects and levels. As a result, it produces anadverse effect on the quality of English writing. Therefore, more and more scholars havebegun to study the negative pragmatic transfer and the counter measures against it.Guided by Senior High School English New Curriculum Standards, and based on thetheory of language transfer and the teaching strategies of second language writing, the writerintends to test the effectiveness of the countermeasures against the negative pragmatic transferin English writing by the experimental approach and the use of statistical analysis andcomparative analysis to classify the data. The experiment is carried out in two classes of thesame level taught by the same English teacher in Zhangzhou No.1Middle School. Throughthe pretest, the writer finds out the negative pragmatic transfer in the writing of the students ofthese two classes. Then countermeasures are taken in the experimental class before posttest.The contrastive analysis between the pretest and the posttest shows the effectiveness of thecountermeasures. Based on the result of the experiment, the writer puts forward somesuggestions to overcome the negative pragmatic transfer. The purpose of this research is toadvise the senior English teachers to use appropriate teaching methods and take propercountermeasures in teaching English writing so as to improve the students’ pragmaticcompetence and writing skills. The writer also hopes that the study can be of some help inteachers’ development and language teaching.
