Jiaowei Middle School, located in Xianyou, Putian, is a typical rural middle school. I have worked there in the past there years. In the graduation exam of junior high schools in Putian in2011, the average score of English for Jiaowei Middle School’s is85.2, lower than the average score of92.5for the whole Putian area, and even much lower than136.2, the average score of Putian No.1Middle School. There are two reasons for this. One is the limited conditions, such as the environment, teaching facilities, students and so on. The other is the poor English abilities of the students from Jiaowei Middle School, which is the main reason and also the focus of this paper. The New English Curriculum Standards was carried out in2001. It mainly emphasizes listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, without the mention of translation ability. Therefore the English teachers in Jiaowei Middle School gradually give up the former teaching method which was mainly based on grammar-translation method. They have adopted new teaching methods such as communicative approach. However, these new teaching methods do not work well in this school. The students there can not adapt to these new teaching methods and their enthusiasm and motivation of learning English have declined. The English teaching quality there has slided. Once in my teaching practice, I managed to improve the students’ English ability by translation means. So this paper will focus on whether we can improve the English teaching quality in rural middle schools and the students’ English ability by means of translation. In my teaching practice, I used translation as an important means of teaching aids, making proper translation practice for students after school. The teaching experiments show that the means of translation has a positive effect on students’ mastery of the basic knowledge of English, and it can effectively improve the students’ English ability.
