The chemical symbol is international unified scientific symbol on behalf of the composition and structure of chemical materials, or chemical reaction process. The chemical symbol is the carrier to express chemical information, and is the basis tool of to learn chemistry. Grasping this tool, learner can give a correct and simply expression to show some substance and its changing process, and remember and understanding accurately and the basic knowledge of chemistry. For junior middle school students, chemical symbol learning is the key stage in learning chemistry, and the teaching practice shows that chemical symbol learning is a key and difficult point of chemistry learning in middle high school, especially point of differentiation of students’ chemical learning. Therefore, studying chemistry symbol teaching in grade nine has a good theoretical significance for the development of the middle school chemistry teaching theory, and has the positive practical significance for the middle school chemistry teaching.In this paper, based on the theory of constructivism and rules of learning in chemistry, the article constructed the learner focused chemistry instructional design pattern, with learners as the center and teachers as the leading factor. The pattern pay attention to the rules of learning in chemistry, pay attention to the chemistry learning conditions, pay attention to students of the active construction of knowledge, and pay attention to the scientific literacy of students and the improvement of the students concerned about the chemical thinking characteristics.In this paper, we carry on the questionnaire survey research on the present situation about learning chemical symbol in grade nine, then analysed the present situation and problems in learning the chemical symbol. On this basis, we discuss learning theory and learning conditions of the ninth grade chemical symbol, combined with the ninth grade chemical symbol of intellectual property.In this paper, we create series of the instructional design about chemical symbol for learners in grade nine, and carry out some teaching experiments. It is found that the learner-focused chemistry instructional design applied to chemical symbol in grade nine conform to the symbolic learning principles, and solve the difficult factors in learning chemical symbol. The learners are more interested in learning. The learners’ learning efficiency and chemical thinking ability are improved to a great extent, especially for the medium students and the poor students. In short, the teaching effect is very significant.
