English reading comprehension always acts as an essential role in English teaching. The New Curriculum Teaching Outline points out that one of the most important tasks in the English teaching is to improve students’ reading skills. But in the past the learning of new words, phrases and sentences has cost a lot of time in the class teaching, which is of little help in improving their reading skills. New Curriculum Standards for High School English Course promulgated by the Ministry of Education of China in 2003 points out that the application of Task-Based Language Teaching(TBLT) and cultivation of the students’ abilities to use English are preferred. TBLT is expressed in the conducting suggestions and required to be put into effect. With the implementation of “English Curriculum Standards”, the study of TBLT has become a hot point. However, the development of this study began only a few years ago, and many teachers have not had a better understanding of its basic concepts and modes, so the traditional teaching method is still playing as the guider in class.Based on the requirements of New Curriculum Standards for High School English Course and the actual needs in English class, the author begins to do the research on the application of TBLT in English teaching to identify the necessity of carrying out TBLT in teaching English reading in senior high schools. The purpose of this thesis is to study the use of TBLT in teaching English reading in senior high schools with the following two questions(1) Is TBLT more effective than the traditional method in developing students’ reading comprehension in senior high schools?(2) In what aspects can TBLT effectively improve students’ reading ability? So as to answer the above two questions, the author selects Class 2 Grade 2 as the experimental subjects in the Fengqiu Senior High School, and the teaching by the TBLT lasts for a semester, and then analyzes the different reading abilities according to the different teaching methods that the teacher uses in their English reading class. The gathering and analyzing of the data from the questionnaires and test results into the following findings:1. Compared with the traditional teaching method, TBLT is more effective to improve the students’ reading ability in senior high schools.2. It can improve students’ learning interests, build their confidence, and change their attitude and strategies to learning English.3. Teachers should take measures to better the TBLT method to help improve the students’ reading abilityThis article is divided into five parts. The first part mainly talks about the research background, significance and objectives. The second part states the literature review, mainly including the brief introduction of task, the introduction of TBLT, the studies of TBLT at home and abroad and some explanation of reading. The third part is about the research design, including the research questions, subjects, methods and procedures.
