When faced with difficulties and setbacks, most of the junior middle school studentsusually behave much disoriented with low abilities of self-care, competence and enduring,especially low adversity quotient. As far as the reasons are concerned, on the one hand, mostof them are the only child in their families with parents’ full care, which in turn makes themperform poorly when dealing with matters after entering the society; on the other hand,because they are in their adolescence, lack of life experience, when the students areconfronted with physical and mental pressures of kinds of failures in academic performance,love and relationship, they will suffer from anxiety, insomnia, depression and fear as a resultof their poor ability to resist stress and strains. More seriously, some of the students willencounter emotional collapse and physical and mental imbalance, which will not onlyinfluence their intelligent performance but also hold up their potential development,cultivation of comprehensive abilities and the improvement of personality. The degree ofadversity quotient does matter with tougher and tougher competition in our society. It is verysignificant to enhance the adversity quotient of the junior middle school students who are thefuture of our society. According to the features and their adversity quotient conditions, ourschools should attach great importance to adversity quotient education, which should also beemphasized in the whole process of education and each link of it. Adversity quotient shouldbe connected with ideological education, daily education, psychological education,professional education and independent education. Relative measures include offering coursesrelated to adversity quotient, holding physiological counseling activities related to adversityquotient, strengthening the monitoring of psychological tests, enhancing social practice andexpand training and encouraging their participation of English speaking competition. How tostrengthen the students’ education to help them withstand setbacks, to improve their mentalquality when facing adversity quotient and to cultivate qualified personals are very importantsubjects on our hand.This study introduces adversity quotient and its importance in the process of juniormiddle students’ growth and success, analyzes the current situation of students’ cultivation inadversity quotient. This study mainly discusses how to cultivate the students’ adversityquotient in the process of English teaching and learning. The first chapter is mainly about the purpose and significance of the study.In the second chapter, the main theories of adversity quotient are introduced.Chapter three is about the problems occurring in the process of English teaching tocultivate the students’ adversity quotient and the reasons to the problems as well. At the sametime, this chapter, combining with the practical problems, discusses the importance ofcultivating adversity quotient in English teaching and learning.Chapter four is mainly about the basic strategies to solve the problems occurring in thecultivation of adversity quotient. The strategies include three aspects. The first aspect is abouthow to improve and cultivate the students’ adversity-resistance ability, including sixsub-aspects which are to perfect the effective psychological counseling’s system, to carry outadversity quotient education connecting with Intelligence Quotient and Emotional Quotienteducation, to strengthen adversity quotient psychological tests and monitoring of the students,to carry out practical training, to carry out value guidance and independent constructiontimely and correctly and to establish effective communication system between school andfamily. The second aspect is about the strategies for cultivating the students’ adversityquotient in the process of English teaching, including five sub-aspects which are the moderateChinese environment of English class, the breaking points for improving the students’interests, encouragement and praise on the students in public, active performance in class andthe necessary obstacles set up in teamwork.Chapter five is to conclude the whole study and to predict the research on adversityquotient cultivation.
