School Motto is highly condensed words or phrases reflect a school’s educational philosophy and characteristics, due to differences in knowledge structure, educational goals and others, people are more interested in attention School Motto. Tracing the source, school motto primary stage of development is the Republic of China. Finding out the school motto’s development track from the Republic of China to the new China, thinking school motto’s problems in the development process and searching for the directed enlightenments are very important for the school motto of development. Through a comparative analysis study of characteristics of the Republic of china and the New China school motto, trying to think about school motto’s problems in the development process and searching for the directed enlightenments.First of all, on the basis of analyzing the relevant documents, this thesis puts forward the concept of School Motto, and expounds its features and functions as well. School motto is highly condensed words or phrases that reflects a school’s educational philosophy and characteristics, plays a role in guiding and inspiring teachers and students. School Motto is characterized by the expression of refined simplicity, highlighting the school characteristics, contains rich content, stability and development co-exist and so on. Meanwhile School Motto also has cohesion and guidance, incentives and constraints, dissemination and transmission functions.Second, through the horizontal comparison analysis of the Republic of China and the New China School Motto, horizontal comparison method is mainly analyzed by the motto of the origin, form and value orientation. From the perspective of the origin of the motto of speaking, the Republic of China and the New China mainly through the way of quoting the classics, but in the Republic of China "The Bible" is a special,and characteristics of the times motto outstanding performance in the new China.and subject characteristics motto became special in the New China. From the perspective of the school motto in terms of the form, school motto language is more diverse in the Republic of China, and words and sentence structure are richer in the new China, but words coincidence phenomenon obviously in the new China. From the perspective of the school motto’s value orientation, ethical orientation is mainstream both in the Republic of China and the new China, but in the Republic of China "western religious" is a special; and in the New China has apparent political orientation, and the content of cognitive orientation school motto is richer.Third, through the vrtical comparison analysis of the Republic of China and the New China School Motto, the main object of the vertical comparison is crossing the two periods’ school mottos. Through analyzing the changes of school mottos, the consistent motto and the changing motto is classified.And the reasons for the changes has also been analyzed. In order to follow the development of the times,or in order to inherit the traditional culture of the school is the main reason.Finally, there are the thoughts and enlightenments after comparing. Breaking the traditional pattern, and innovating the school motto to change the coincidence problem. The subject characteristics mottos should be avoid the same words or phrases.School motto should be diversity and modernity for avoiding the hysteresis. At last, school motto should be breake the traditional format, and have artistic quality.
