Teacher is the fundamental existence of the universities. The quality and level of the teachers determines the development level of various aspects of universities, and affect the academic activities of universities, as well as the overall quality of students and the ability to provide services to the society, and finally influences the level of running a university. The first-class university, especially the research university, need first-class teachers. Thus, improving the level of running a college by the professional development of teachers has become a strategic means.The development motivation of teachers is the fundamental force to promote the teachers engaged in behaviors and activities under the teacher role, it is also a factor which influences their driving force of professional ability promotion. In addition, it is not only a good predictor of faculty development state, but also a psychological variable of active development of consciousness in the process of teachers’specialization. Development motivation of teachers actively inspires them in educational process, directly determining the teachers’ participation and sustainability of the occupation education activities, efforts level, and ultimately the level of professional behavior of teachers. Teachers have development demand of different levels or different types in professional development in the process. It has a profound impact on the professional development of teachers. Therefore, the study between motivation and demand has important theoretical value.Faculty development in research universities has its own particularity. Compared with teachers in other types of universities, teachers in research university shoulder varieties of responsibilities, such as teaching, scientific research and social service. So its development direction and development aspirations are full of features. Therefore, this paper will cover development motivation, development rules, rational demand, and corresponding incentive strategies. All these could be helpful in improving teacher’s professional development in research universities. This article selects part of teachers in a Research University of Shandong Province as research object. Professional development motivation is the start point of this paper. It carries on the discussion on motivation and demand through the questionnaire survey, data analysis, document analysis and other methods. The topics range from current situation, entry motivation, and professional development tendency to its influence factors. It can help us to recognize the demand in the process of faculty development. Finally, based on the mature experience of existing relevant education theory and other humanities and social science disciplines, the paper proposes targeted measures on the faculty development of research university teachers.
