With the continuous development of space technology, as one of the key technologies in the field of aerospace, space remote sensing technology has become increasingly high scientific value. The application of the new type of remote sensing optical equipment makes the amount of space remote sensing data increasing. As a result, the limited storage and transmission bandwidth of the channel on satellite can’t meet the transmission requirements of the massive remote sensing image data. Therefore, it is particularly necessary to make a research on the remote sensing image data compression technology.This thesis is funded by a practical engineering project of a space technology company, which aims to design an image compression system with low cost and high reliability to meet the project needs by studying on the image compression technology. Based on the existing technology implementations, a system solution that uses FPGA and JPEG2000algorithm ASIC chip (ADV212) is finally proposed. Furthermore, the feasibility and correctness of the program are verified.The image compression technology and its development at home and abroad are first introduced, which focus on JPEG2000image compression standard. On this basis, an image compression system based on JPEG2000standard for this project is designed and implemented. Next, the hardware implementation of the satellite image compression system is provided, including the design of each module’s logical function and processing of the external interface etc, with the use of Xilinx FPGA to implement logic circuit of each module’s interface. Finally, a performance analysis is made on this system, and the feasibility and correctness of the program is verified.
