In this paper, we based on the perspective of city size and economic density, combined with the municipal districts statistics data of13prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu province, by examining the estimated elasticity of productivity respect to city size and economic density, in order to determine whether the existence and role of urbanization economic in Jiangsu province.First, we used Rank-Size Rule to dynamically describe municipal districts of non-agricultural population size of the13prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu province, the result shows that distribution of these cities is well-proportioned, the highest-rank city is less prominent, whereas small and medium-sized cities grow better, this results belong to second place-based distribution. The structure capacity is fluctuated and gradually increasing trend estimated by the model, indicating that13prefecture-level cities the size of the total non-agricultural population is gradually increasing, and the ability of cities to absorb new population is also increasing in Jiangsu province, while the results also manifest that the ratio of the first estimated city size and the actual city size is present a downward trend by this model. The Rank-Size Rule further provides us with a good assumption that the study of the relationship of city population size and productivity, we exclude the large cities or the strongest economic impact the productivity.Second, we used Moomaw, R.L. Model to estimate the effects of productivity respect to city size in Jiangsu province during1998to2009, the model calculation results between1.4%and3.7%, and average of2.4%, indicating that the effects of productivity respect to city size are positive, comparison with the analysis of the Yangtze River Delta region, we found that the output of Jiangsu Province, the share of wages lower than the same period in the Yangtze River Delta region, but the elasticity of wage respect to city size estimated higher than the Yangtze River Delta, in addition, the estimated elasticity of city size respect to labor productivity is1.6%in the Yangtze River Delta Area, showing that the effects of Jiangsu province are more than the Yangtze River Delta Area in the same period.Third, in order to describe the efficient of urbanization economies more penetrative, we introduced the conception and model of city economic density, and used panel data to estimate again, based on the time fixed effects regression model, the elastic of productivity respect to economic density is23.2%in13prefecture-level cities of Jiangsu province during1998to2009, and the estimated parameter of primary education and higher educational, regard as the level of human capital, are significantly positive,0.074and0.04respectively. The results are correspond to our expected, indicating the level of human capital and economic density can improve the city’s labor productivity level, also found from the cross-section OLS model, the effects of urbanization economic present a certain periodicity, the effects of urbanization economic has experienced two periods of volatility, the cycle length about6years in Jiangsu province during1998to2009. With the model results that the expansion of city size and economic density increases, they have role in promoting the labor productivity of the city, which in accord with the present urban development of Jiangsu province. Finally, the elastic of labor productivity respect to city size and economic density in Jiangsu province is lower than some western countries by our estimate model, the strategy we given is enhance the city economic strength and the society connotation, especially advocate constructing the intensive style city,at the same time we can promote the development of urban agglomeration range over many cities, to promote the coordinated development of urban agglomerations, cities according to their various advantages and features, dislocation development, feature development and the gradient of development, rational function of positioning the city to promote intra-regional functional differentiation between cities to form an integrated system of urban functions.
