Lu Xun’s Contribution To Science Popularization

Mr. Lu Xun does not only dedicated his life to the cause of literature, but also engagedin popularizing science to which he made outstanding contributions. Lu Xun originallypopularized scientific knowledge, scientific theories, scientific spirits to the public in hisown works and comments on the science popularization movements for the Chinesepeople, or by translating foreign science works into ChineseBasing on examining the social context and Lu Xun’s personal experiences, thethesis explores the reasons and aims of Lu Xun engaging in popularizing science,discussing Lu Xun’s contributions to science popularization. Lu Xun’s contribution toscience is mainly reflected in four aspects of writing science popularization books,translating science books from English into Chinese, teaching science to students inschool and writing scientific essays. The following three parts consist of the main bodyof the thesis: Firstly the social context and Lu Xun’s personal experience are examinedto explore the factors arousing Lu Xun to engage in science popularization and his aimsto popularizing science are elaborated. When Lu Xun popularized science, he alwaysrelated scientific papers, science speech and science works to the social context as thescience writers do today and emphasized proper approaches to popularize science.Secondly, what Lu Xun’s contributed to science popularization is discussed, whichincludes four aspects of science popularization books, science books translation,science-teaching, scientific essay and comments, following four steps:(a)Lu Xun’sscience popularization books are listed in forms to compare with other authors that timeboth qualitatively and quantitatively;(b)th foreign scientific works translated by Lu Xunare also analysized in list, compared with others’ both at that time and before.(c)theinfulences of Lu Xun’s science-teaching on science popularization are discussed; and (d)Lu Xun’s Scientific Essays are also discussed.In a word, In order to make the Chinese public understanding of science and putting scientific knowledge into practices, Lu Xun tried his best to engage in sciencepopularization and made great contribution.
