Manufacturing industry is the pillar industry of national economy, and it fully reflects theeconomy power of a nation. Measuring the degree of economic development is not onlyincluding the total economic growth, but also concludes the optimization of the industrialstructure. In the view of the trend and the path of the development of manufacturing industry, there is an obvious difference between a typical industrialized countries and China, whichshows the catch-up feature. Throughout the process of China’s industrialization, the essence isthe process of evolution of manufacturing structure, which represents the change of theallocation of resources in department of manufacturing industry. Since the founding of China,China’s manufacturing output surpassed U.S. in2010, as the world’s manufacturing power. However, China’s manufacturing industry also faces unprecedented challenges withimpressive achievements. In the background of advocating to reduce energy consumption andgreenhouse gas emissions, based on the characteristics of the development of manufacturingindustry, it has new requirements for China because of the constraints on resources and theenvironment. At the same time, the cost pressure challenges the capacity of China’smanufacturing enterprises. China’s manufacturing industry stands in a crossroads. It isimportant for economy development how to optimize industry structure. This article focuses on the characteristics and problems of the China’s manufacturingsectors and regions’ structure since the new century. On the basis of the main characteristicsof the changes of manufacture structure in developed countries, we explore the beneficialreference for China’s manufacturing development and the suggestions of the adjustment andoptimization of manufacture structure. First, the article reviews the history of the changes ofmanufacturing structure and influence factors. Secondly, it’s the empirical analysis on thecharacteristics of the changes of manufacturing structure since the new century. The empiricalanalysis is the core and innovation of the article and it concludes two parts. The first partlearns the relationship between China’s manufacturing sector and the overall growth of the industrial economy by the quantitative analysis, which shows the quantity of China’slabor-intensive industry declines and the one of technology-intensive industry increasesrapidly. The second part analyzes the current situation of manufacturing industry in China’sthree areas in-depth, and then researches the region features of the manufacturing industry inrecent years. Finally, according to the characteristics and problems of China’s manufactureindustry, the experience and lessons of the developed countries’ manufacturing industry, itproposes that China should increase input for scientific research, and enhance the capabilityof independent innovation. In addition, it should promote industry restructuring and optimizethe industrial layout. Last but not the end, it should build a flexible and dynamic labor market.
