The concept of protecting farmland comes from the issue of food security. As thecarrier of food production, arable land is scarce and irreplaceable. The world’s arable landsuitable for development is about4.2billion hectares, accounted for only about30percentof the world’s land area. In recent years, with the industrialization and urbanizationadvancement, a large number of cultivated land had been occupied. At the same time, population growth, dietary structure improvement and the implementation of the strategy ofbiological energy all lead to more food demand, which means more cultivated land areneeded in the future. Therefore, the contradiction between the supply and demand ofcultivated land was deepened. On the one hand, cultivated land is the most importantmaterial foundation. On the other hand, cultivated land is the most important means ofproduction. So, cultivated land is the guarantee of food security. The evaluation ofcultivated land protection is very meaningful. This paper takes the countries with rich arable land as examples, from both domesticand international perspective to explore the cultivated land preservation. Firstly, itestablished the model of farmland demand, in the basis of food demand estimation toestimate the demand of farmland. Then, it measured the available arable land by analyzingthe potential of arable land. So it can determine the differences between the future demandof arable farmland and supply of these countries. In the end, it explored the contributionthese countries has made to the protection of world’s food security and make furthersuggestion about overseas cultivated land investment for the full use of potential arable landand the safety of world’s food security based on cultivated land.
