Study On Scientific Activities And Spirits Of Zhou Changshou’s

Since the collision between Chinese and western civilization occurred, Chinese patriotic scholars and far-sighted people began to explore the root of western civilization to update and inherit Chinese civilization. As a physicist, translator and educator in the early period of Republic of China, Zhou Changshou’s translation of physics, cosmology and a series of western science classics had a profound impact on the development of our country’s science and the construction of scientific thought. During his study in Japan, Zhou Changshou was one of the organizers of Bingchen Society in Tokyo (later renamed it "the Science and Art Society of China"), then started and distributed affiliated publication------Wissen and Wissenschaft Journal to spread the latest western scientific thoughts and culture. He held the position of editor for20years. In these two decades, Zhou Changshou took his place in front ranks in the world of popularizing scientific knowledge, introducing western latest science and technology and scientific methods. After Returning to China, he worked at the Commercial Press, in that meantime, he translated a large amount of western scientific classic works and was a pioneer of introducing the latest knowledge of physics, such as quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity to our countrymen. As a patriotic intellectual, Zhou Changshou took part in many scientific activities, made outstanding contributions to scientific enterprise development in our country. As a modern scientific educator, Zhou Changshou wrote his unique scientific thoughts and scientific methods in his book, impart scientific educate methods to the teachers and teach the latest scientific knowledge and spirit to the students, personally practice his ideal of "develop the country through science and education".In the Republic of China era, there was a group of scientists who continued exploring for Chinese renaissance, Zhou Changshou was one of them, and his effort should not be ignored. But the life of the time is changing, his scientific activities were covered by the earth of history, and his scientific thoughts in most cases could not be understood by public, so that researches about his scientific activities and scientific thoughts were still in the blank. This paper by the way of detailed introducing Zhou Changshou’s life and historical background, the scientific activities he participated in, the whole story of his translation and introduction of Einstein’s famous theory------the theory of relativity, his unique scientific thoughts, scientific methods, concept of science history and concept of science education, his contribution to the development of China’s science and technology,and his important role and high position in the development of China’s scientific career, trying hard excavating and drawing the outline of Zhou Changshou’s scientific activities and scientific sprits deeply and integrally. The research of this dissertation on one hand could replenish the missing part of Zhou’s scientific thoughts and scientific methods in history of science and technology study, so that reexamine and localize historical figure, to evaluate Zhou Changshou more objective, more comprehensive and more equitable; On the other hand, via excavating reference materials and literature, showing Zhou Changshou’s historical value and realistic significance.
