The new rural cooperative medical system is a kind of medical mutual system? which is organized, guided and supported by the government and financed by the individual, collective and government. It mainly solved serious illness for farmers. At the present stage, the system, which is china’s basic medical system for632million farmers, provided them basic medical and health services. For a certain extent, the system reduced the farmers’economic burden in disease and relieved the phenomenon of farmers’ poverty caused by the illness. Rural grassroots’medical and health undertakings also have great progress, the overall health level of the farmers is improved in our country. Therefore, whether the development of new rural cooperative medical system could be sustainable has a close relationship with the rural residents’vital interests, the rural economy’s healthy and sustainable development, the coordinated development of national economy and the social stability.The new rural cooperative medical system in our country has been carried out for ten years, which has accumulated many successful experiences and has been applied to other areas according to local conditions. It has made more fruitful achievements, but exposes many problems, which has a direct impact on the sustainable operation of the system. The new rural cooperative medical care system has such problems as lacking the guarantee of legal system, defective financing mechanism, unreasonable compensation pattern design, imperfect supervision system, which directly influence the sustainable development of the system. Therefore, when we are enjoying the new rural cooperative medical care system, we should face up to the existence of problems, and take appropriate measures to guarantee the sustainable operation of the system.This paper fully explains the theoretical foundation of the new rural cooperative medical care system, and summarizes the necessity and feasibility of new rural cooperative medical system’s sustainable development through reviewing the development of traditional rural cooperative medical system. Then the paper analyzes the present operation situation of new rural cooperative medical care system, finds out existing problems, and puts forward feasible policy and suggestions on the basis of drawing lessons from successful experience at home and abroad in order to guarantee the sustainable development of the new rural cooperative medical system in China.
