Interpersonal trust problems within enterprises is an important factor affecting theenterprise long-term development. Only when subordinates’ trust in leaders and mutual trustamong employees could be built,the enterprise could improve the cohesion, reducemanagement costs effectively, consolidate and enhance enterprise competitive advantage.middle managers take on more complex role and challenging within enterprises, Fromthe initial supervisor to administrator in bureaucracy, then to manager who has a certaindecision-making power in flattening organization, capacity requirements turn to emphasizeon soft skills (such as interpersonal skills) instead of hard skills (e.g., technicalskills).a competent middle manager tends to make the subordinates support and trust,therefore middle managers need to convey competent image in the front of the subordinates.Impression management strategy is often used in interpersonal interaction,it helps to createa certain identity or image, change others cognitive positively for their own, so the study onhow middle managers implement impression management tactics to create or presentcompetent image, then to obtain the trust of subordinates is very important.The paper carried on the empirical research. It studies on the relationship of middlemanages’ impression management, competency and upward trust. We set three kindsof impression management tactics which middle managers used often in interpersonalinteraction with subordinates as independent variables, independent variables, namelyingratiation and self-promotion. collecting data in questionnaire survey. running the statisticalsoftware SPSS to analyze data, we draw the following conclusion: middle manager’impression management has a significant positive effect on upward trust,namelyingratiation has a significant positive effect on trust; middle manager’ impressionmanagement has significantly positive impact on competency, namely ingratiation has asignificant positive effect on competency; Competence has a significant positive effect onupward trust, job competency and interpersonal competence both has significant positiveinfluence; Competency play a intermediary role between impression management and the trust; Some demographic variables have some certain effect on impressionmanagement, competency, the trust and their dimensions. Middle managers canimplement namely ingratiation strategy to convey competency image, then to earn the trustof subordinates.
