Integrating innovation resources, decentralizing innovation risk, improving innovationperformance are the intention of forming Innovation Alliance. But when members ofInnovation Alliance share knowledge, innovate the new technology, issues frequently arise, for example, resource input mechanism is not perfect, the risk management mechanism isimperfect, benefit distribution mechanisms is incomplete. Especially the risks of IntellectualProperty, which is related to the Alliance’s core resources, but also is related to the alliance’sdistribution of benefits, become difficult to resolve and can not be avoided. Therefore, researching the impact of intellectual property risk in Innovation Alliance on innovationperformance has a positive practical significance. The study found that there are both competition and cooperation in most companiesinvolved in alliance. They choose to cooperate, because they are lack of innovation resources,or they are in order to quickly develop products in the market to gain a competitive advantage. However, the firms which choose to cooperate are competitors in the market, they want to befreely access to core resources of other companies, and thus developing products to combatcompetitors. This research begins from the perspective of alliance members’ co-opetition, andanalyzes how co-opetition impacts the relative between intellectual property risk andinnovation performance. The main work of this study and its conclusions can be summarized as the followingaspects:(1)Scholars study the risk of intellectual property from a legal point of view, this articlefrom the perspective of management. When innovation alliance members share theknowledge and technology, intellectual property rights are vulnerable to be theft by theirpartners, intellectual property rights are unintentionally lost, intellectual property rights arenot fully invested, the ownership of new intellectual property is not clear. Therefore, thehigher the degree of knowledge sharing, the greater the risk of intellectual property thealliance members face.(2)Previous researches of the risk of intellectual property limit the negative correlationbetween research risk of intellectual property and innovation performance, this study findsthat the obtain performance of members play an intermediary role in risk of intellectualproperty and innovation performance, deepening inherent mechanism about the impact ofintellectual property risks on innovation performance. Conclusion is that the existence ofintellectual property risks reduce obtain performance of members, thus weakening the alliance overall innovation performance.(3)Study found that the members of alliance both share and protect their core knowledge, both cooperation to innovate and competition to gain competitive advantage. This study onthe basis of in-depth study of this complex organization competition and cooperation in thegame on the impact of intellectual property risks, the study found the co-opetition reduces therelative between risk of intellectual property and alliance performance regulation. Evidenceshows that the stronger alliance members’ motivation of co-opetition, the smaller the impactof intellectual property risks on alliance performance. The key conclusion of the study on Innovation Alliance has important guidingsignificance. during operation risks faced by intellectual property issues are of theparticipation of enterprises in the alliance innovation process has important managerialimplications, but in the study, there are still some inadequate, for example, innovation alliancehas not be classified, data are not longitudinal panel data, the research will be furtherimproved.
