With the WTO Agreement signed, China had begun opening financial market with a greater rapidity and relaxing the restrictions on market access and business scope for foreign capital banks and other financial firms abroad. Meanwhile, Chinese merchant banks are facing with the plights of financial securitization, disintermediation and excess liquidity. With the rapid transformation happened in financial area, national merchant banks of China need to accelerate marketizing process, emphasis on development of retail business, and improve their core competitiveness of retail business by reform and innovation.Middle and small-size banks, such as China Merchants Bank, has planned and practiced ahead in Chinese financial market.Based on the concept of service driven by Customer Experience, they committed to establish their own name brands, grab good-quality market resources.Those measures make these banks ran ahead in the procedure of strategic transformation and sustainable development of the merchant banks in China.Facing the great challenges brought by new financial circumstance, four major state-owned commercial banks led by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China that aim to win a place in the market under fiercely white-hot competition, are supposed to analyse their current situation of retail banking,focus on the aspects of channel integration, business innovation and customer’s development to explore a revolutionary path of management and development with the help of significant experiences on retail banking at home and abroad.Based on the analysis of current internal and external environment of retail banking’s development,this thesis expound a theory of reproduction of retail banking. By reviewing the experience development of middle and small-size banks, especially of CMB, this paper indicates a direction for transformation of ICBC’s retail banking. Meanwhile, according to review achievements f ICBC’s retail banking received recently, analyse opportunities and challenges presented in front of the ICBC,my research aims to propose some implementing measures of retail banking transformation and innovation for the ICBC in such three main aspects:product transformation, channel transformation and framework.
