After years of development, Shanghai urban tourism has its influence all over the world in some extent. Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks, as important images of the urban tourism, are getting more and more attention from academe. This essay mainly focuses on the business characteristics and market characteristics of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks, based on which, the formation mechanism will be analyzed.Firstly, researches on the domestic and foreign urban tourism developing status, blocks, characteristic blocks, and characteristic tourism blocks will be reviewed in this paper.Secondly, summary the development history of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks and analyze their historical background of formation and evolution. Generalize and discriminate the concepts of recreational business districts, characteristic tourism blocks, and theme blocks by summarizing50different characteristic Shanghai commercial streets. After classifying those characteristic tourism blocks, East Nanjing Road, Xintiandi and Zhujiajiao North Street, which are typical and representative, were chosen as the sample blocks for research.Thirdly, conduct a survey of these three sample streets’commercial activities by on-the-spot visits. Based on the accurate and detailed information got, organize and classify their actual status, find out their rules and differences and conclude the business characteristics of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks. The business characteristics of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks can be reduced to:retail distribution corresponding to its main functional orientation, balanced allocation and functional complementation between dominated retail distribution and the rest of the class, as well as comprehensive business grades of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks.Fourthly, by a random questionnaire survey of tourists in these tourism areas, conclude the tourist market characteristic. This study is mainly on two aspects. One is from the demographics point, including tourists’source structure, gender, age, career and revenue structure. One is on the tourist behavior aspect, like with fellow-traveler or not, trip purpose, sojourn time and consumption behavior.Finally, based on the conclusion of business and market characteristics of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks, summary the formation mechanism of them from three different elements, which are external motivation factors, internal motivation factors and tourist market factors. External motivation factors:politics and policy, economy and urban planning. Internal impetus:location, topics&culture and history factors. Tourist marketing elements:tourists’recreation demand factors, demographic factors and Tourists behavior factors.Hope this can contribute to the reasonable development and construction of Shanghai characteristic tourism blocks, other areas in China as well.
