Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) blended standard solution was used to explore the detection method of TVOC by GC and to determine the best chromatographic conditions. The improved process used only26.1min, which is25.9min shorter than that of the original one (52min) described in GB/T18883-2002. The separating degree of each component in the TVOC blended standard solution was greater than99%. The RSD of precision was between1.05%and2.89%. The recovery was between95%and102%, and the detection limit was0.020μg.The contents of TVOC in air samples volatilizing from painting or high density fiberboard was analyzed by the best chromatographic conditions had determined. When air temperature and air humidity were steady, the conclusions were drawn as follows. Painting can volatilize much more TVOC than high density fiberboard. TVOC from two materials can not volatilize completely during1176hours. Benzene was the highest content in TVOC volatilizing from painting, the rests of the content, by many to less, were styrene, paraxylene and m-xylene, o-xylene, butyl acetate, methylbenzene, ethylbenzene. The content percents of benzene and methylbenzene volatilize from high density fiberboard were about50%of TVOC. The content percents of butyl acetate, ethylbenzene and styrene were higher than10%each. The content percents of p-xylene, o-xylene and m-xylene were lower. While ventilating was a effective method which can reduce TVOC in the air, and ventilating was longer, reduction rate was higher. The content of TVOC was1.820%compared that without ventilating. The contents of TVOC in air samples volatilizing from painting and adsorbed by activate carbon was analyzed by the best chromatographic conditions had determined. When air temperature and air humidity were steady, the conclusions were drawn as follows. Activate carbon can adsorb every component of TVOC detected in this method without selectivity. And the adsorption rate was higher than90%,after1176hours activate carbon still can adsorb TVOC. Activated carbon adsorption and ventilation were two effective methods to reduce TVOC in indoor air, which can reduce contents of TVOC above99%when used together.
