In current industrial production, light-colored C9petroleum resin is generallyproduced with cationic polymerization. It was reported that the color was caused bythe different content of indene/etc. and degree of conjugation, but the influence oftheir content is lack of systematic analysis. Besides, the diversity of C9materialvaries corresponding polymerization conditions. In this paper, the cationic polymerizations of pure components simulated C9fraction were carried out in the presence of various active components content in thepolymerization systems. The effects of active components content on the properties ofC9petroleum resins were investigated. The C9petroleum resins with differentdicyclopentadiene content were characterized by FI-IR.The results showed that the increasing content of indene and dicyclopentadieneboth improved the softening point. However, dicyclopentadiene took part in thecopolymerization and introduced unsaturated double bonds into C9resin. Thethermo-oxidative degradation of unstable double bonds contributed to the color ofpetroleum resins. The optimal synthesis conditions of cationic polymerizations of cracking C9fraction from a petrochemical corporation with boron trifluoride etherate as thecatalyst. As the dosage of catalyst increased, the yield and softening point ofpetroleum resin increased first and decreased later when the dosage of catalyst wasover0.8%.Reaction temperature greatly affected the polymerization, and the yield increasedwith the rise of temperature between30oC and80oC. Besides, the yield essentiallyunchanged obviously when the temperature was between80oC and100oC. However, too high reaction temperature worsened the hue of the resin. As the reactiontemperature increased, the softening point of petroleum resin increased first anddecreased later when the reaction temperature was over50%.As the reaction time increased, the yield of petroleum resin increased, thesoftening point decreased. However, the hue and bromine value showed little change. The decreased concentration of raw materials had little effect on the reaction rate andthe suitable reaction time is6h. The results showed that the optimal reaction conditions were: using borontrifluoride etherate as the catalyst, weight of catalyst0.8%,50oC,6h.
