Ceramic materials are widely used in various fields as its high hardness, high strength, high resistance to heat and corrosion. Among them, alumina with its excellent mechanical property and high mechanical strength become one of the most widely used ceramic materials. Direct processing of ceramic green body is easy to cause edge damage and low surface accuracy. The intensity of sintered ceramic is greatly increased, increasing the processing difficulty. Therefore, using the low temperature heat treatment namely pre-sintered, of ceramic green body, results in the improvement of its mechanical strength and surface quality of the processed micro structures. This article studied the different stages of ceramic material removal through long groove machining, the influence of processing parameters and drilled micro holes on alumina ceramic to obtain the optimal machining conditions. The ceramic green bodies were pressed with different pressure, and then pre-sintering process was treated to improve their strength. The flexure strength was measured by three-point bending tests. The results show that the strength of bodies is a linear increase with an increase of the pressure.Three different removal stages were obtained through machining different depth of long grooves, and the influence of processing parameters is studied. The phenomenon of chip adsorbed on the tool was analyzed under different rotation. The results show that the amount of chips on the tool was decreased with the increase of rotation.Using the micro cutting tool fabricated by the wire electrode discharge grinding (WEDG) technology online to drill micro holes on the pre-sintered ceramic, the influence of different processing parameters on the micro-drilling is studied. The experimental results show that the longest tool life and the largest material removal in micro-drilling can be achieved under the conditions that the D shape cross sectional tool is used, the pre-sintering temperature is 800 ℃, and the lubricant (water) is used. At the same time, the inlet and outlet quality of a micro hole is improved. Finally the influence of lubricant on machining gap of micro hole was studied. The results show that the clearance value is decreased obviously.
