The development of science, technology, social economy and culture build the material foundation of our times. With the development of the mass production, material abundance makes people pay more attention to their emotional needs. Compared with the modern design which is to emphasise on the function of the product effect without considering the emotional needs of the "beauty" and "feeling", emotional design, on the contrast, is a design concept based on people’s inner emotional and spiritual needs. This paper took the theory of emotional design proposed by a cognitive psychologist Donald A. Norman as a starting point. At the same time, the material basis for the analysis of emotional design selected the birch bark products which were affected by the northern hemisphere’s "birch bark culture". Birch bark products have the quality of corrosion resistance, moistureproofed, and easy to be shaped and reproduced. Besides, many other excellent performances have been widely used as necessities in lives of northern hemisphere’s hunting and nomadic production since the Old Stone Age. Birch bark products, as the carrier of the national emotion, contain the ancient people’s material and spiritual culture.Emotional design concept has three dimensions in design:instinct level, behavior level and reflective level. Three dimensions could exist alone as well as interact with each other. This paper put the effort to explore and analyze the traditional design features of birch bark products both at home and abroad through the examples of birch bark products in three dimensions respectively, which could be provided to local birch bark handicrafts development in our country. This thesis mainly includes the research object, the present situation, purpose, contents, methods, and made the research framework in the introduction. The second part used "emotional design" of the three dimensions of traditional birch bark products’ materials choice from colours and regional material culture aspects. The third part used the example analysis into the emotional design of modern products. The fourth part was trying to use "emotional design" for the birch bark crafts design to explore the new development direction. The fifth part summarized the problems that the birth bark product would be faced to, and proposed the culture heritage and development of bitch bark.
