Study On The Development And Design Method Of Ewenki Birch Bark Crafts

As an ethnic minority with less than 31 thousands total populations, Ewenki has superb craftsmanship in making birch bark products. By elaborating Ewenki’s ethnic festivals, folk common sense, language art and religious belief, this paper explicitly described its traditional living styles and customs. It presented hunting culture, birch bark culture and reindeer culture; and illustrated the varieties, making method, historical role, existing status, artistic methods and design concepts of birch bark products. Starting from design perspective, this paper analyzed the feasibility of transforming Ewenki birch bark crafts to carrier and media that can carry forward its ethnic cultures. In addition, it drew forth the thinking on Ewenki’s cultural inheritance, demonstrated that birch bark crafts are suitable to be regarded as carrier for inheriting Ewenki’s ethnic cultures due to portability and durability, different themes representation and strong adaptation to modern society.Keeping a foothold on design methodology, it expounded the relations between people and matters via elaboration on’matters’and’reasons’, and then put forward four design methods (reduction method, independence method, fitness method and add-on method). The final part conducted practice verification on four design methods via designing proposal, so as to prove operation feasibility.
