Sugar refinery filter mud was solid waste which produced in the production process of white sugar clarification treated of syrup mixture in the sugar factory, which produced accompanying with the production of thousand tons of sugars every year in China. The accumulation cover areas of filter mud was large, the organic matter and carbohydrate contains in filter mud caused the filter mud easily moldy smell and polluted the environment. The main component of carbonation cane sugar refinery filter mud was calcium carbonate which content was more than 80%. Calcium carbonate was an important raw material for industrial production, and the calcium carbonate in filter mud belonged to precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC). As the production process of PCC was complex and high cost, using filter mud could reduce production costs and improve economic benefit and reduce environmental pollution. In this paper, we mainly studied how to make paint by using calcium carbonate in filter mud. The research was divided into three aspects: the removal of organic compounds from filter mud, the bleach of filter mud and the production of paint. The removal of organic matter was the focus of this paper. The remove of sugar used mold method and the removal rate was 81 %. The removal of protein used salt-soluble method, and we studied different effects on protein removal including temperature, the concentration of NaCl, the solid-liquid ratio and the dissolution time with the remaining protein content in the process of sugar filter mud as references. On the basis of single factor tests, the orthogonal test of the optimal working parameters was worked out and tested. The results revealed: the content of crude protein was 7.77%, the content of total sugar was 12.2% and the content of calcium carbonate was 82.46% in sugar refinery filter mud. The optimum conditions for salt-soluble were that the temperature was 40℃, the concentration of Na Cl was 1%, the solid-liquid ratio was 1:10, and the dissolution time was 90 min. The protein content of the sugar filter mud after treatment was 1.36% and the removal rate was 80%. The method of removing protein with sodium chloride method was simple, low cost and high removal rate of protein, so it can be used in practical production. The best bleaching agent and the best bleaching conditions were confirmed through experiments of the bleaching of filter mud. The results revealed: the optimum bleach was H2O2; the optimum conditions were that the temperature was 40 ℃, the concentration was 1%, and the time was 60 min. Bleaching the sugar filter mud under the optimal conditions, the white degree of the filter mud was 69.7% ISO.According to the formulation of imitation porcelain paint, we studied the production of paint making and the subsequent research of paint using sugar filter mud after purification and bleaching. The results revealed: the appearance of paint was rough and the color was milky white; the white degree of paint was 79.6% ISO, humidity was 38.2%, pH was 9, the surface drying time was about 45 min, the whole drying time was about 5.5h, the density of paint was 1.42 g/mL, the screening was 0.57%. Paint was unclear and slightly cloudy, the heat resistance, water resistance and alkali resistance was qualified, but the acid resistance was relatively poor. In summary, the filter mud can replace PCC used in paint production.
