Mainly engaged in viscous crude oil development,Shuguang Oilfield ranks among the older mining sites of Liaohe Oilfield. With time going by and the application of various development means, sand production is becoming increasingly severe. However, as sanding prevention measures have run into bottlenecks, sand production is becoming inescapable. During the gathering and transporting process, the sandy crude oil will not only corrode and block pipelines, but also result in damages to the gathering and transportation facilities. How to guarantee the normal gathering and transportation of sandy crude oil is a vital problem for Shuguang Oilfield. Centering on Shuguang No.1 Oilfield, the following studies were carried out in the paper:(1) based on high viscosity of crude oil, in-depth studies were conducted on advantages and disadvantages of viscosity reduction measures. According to the practical operating environment, viscosity reduction measures were finalized. (2) Research and analysis were made of existing common desanding technologies, their strengths and weaknesses, characteristics and the scope of application, in a an effort to finalize a desanding method applicable to Shuguang No.l Oilfield. (3) In line with the basic requirements on oil-sand separation, four sets of desanding techniques were conceived. And meanwhile, analysis was made of their advantages and disadvantages to decide on an optimal scheme. (4) By studying the sand stability, the relationship between sand particle size and the crude oil viscosity were made clear. Besides, a boundary between where the sands remain stable and unstable in output crude oil was determined. Therefore, theoretical basis for further analysis of the sand particle stability in Shuguang viscous crude oil became available. This research offered a new clue to viscous crude oil desanding of Shuguang Oilfield and conceived desanding technologies. Covering only small areas, the necessary key equipment in the research was easy to operate, highly efficient and able to achieve the recycling of resources. This was cost-effective. Besides, a new preprocessing concept was invented, which led to a much clearer idea on technological optimization.
