With the development of modern society, functional medical dressing development has been made in environmental engineering, as well as the field of orthopedic biomaterials, functional fibers as a functional precursor medical dressing has become a hot topic. Currently, the method for preparing the functional fibers are mainly finishing method and blend spinning method. Two methods in the actual production process, each have their own advantages, finishing method is simple and blend spinning helps to improve product quality. In order to adapt to the actual complex wound environment, this paper take sodium alginate as raw material, sulfonamide as drug model, combining blend spinning and post-treatment to prepare functional alginate fiber. This study had examined the morphology, mechanics, moisture and release properties of alginate fiber with different drug content; and then chemical cross-linked alginate fiber with glutaraldehyde, investigated the influence of different crosslinking agent concentration on fibers’ morphology, mechanics, moisture and release properties; at last, the drug-loaded alginate wound dressing was prepared with papermaking method, and examined its morphology, mechanics, air permeability, moisture absorption and release properties. The results were showed as follows:(1) Preparation and properties of sulfonamide-loaded alginate fibers: we investigate the effects of different drug loading capacity towards alginate fiber’s properties, as drug loading capacity increases, the first increase after a fiber breakage strength decrease, when the feed ratio of drug is 2%, the best mechanical strength turns up, 1.5 cN/dtex breaking strength; and the alginate fiber is superabsorbent polymer with water absorption amount 12.6 g/g in A-solution, sulfonamides diminished water absorbent capacity of alginate fiber, the water absorbent capacity reached 10 g/g when the feed ratio is 10%. In addition, sulfonamides increased antibacterial properties help to improve alginate fibers against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. And antibacterial rate reached 86.4% and 94.6%, respectively.(2) Preparation and properties of chemical cross-linked drug-loaded alginate fiber: we investigate the properties of alginate fiber with different concentrations of glutaraldehyde. With glutaraldehyde concentration increases, the fiber moisture absorption decreased, when the glutaraldehyde concentration is 1%, the moisture absorption in PBS only 7.5 g/g; and with the increase of the concentration of the crosslinking agent, its sustained-release effect is more pronounced. Additionally, cell adhesion experiments showed that fibroblasts can be adhered to the fiber surface within half an hour, proved the alginate material having a good biocompatibility.(3) Preparation and Evaluation of alginate wound dressing: We use the papermaking process for preparing a drug-loaded wound dressings. The wound dressing we prepared have a certain strength, and keep the original properties of alginate fiber. And with water vapor transmission rate test, we found that chemical crosslinked alginate wound dressing has a better air permeability with water vapor transmission rate reaching 28 g.m-2.day-1. In addition, with cell adhesion assay and cell toxicity test, the alginate material has also proved to be better biocompatibility and biological safety.
