As the tinplate substrate, skin-pass plate’s surface morphology deeply affects the porosity of tinplate and there is a direct correlation between the control technology and the quality of tinplate. However, researches on the influence of the surface morphology of skin-pass plate on the porosity of tinplate is not enough and there is a lack of systematic analysis on the controlling of the surface morphology of skin-pass plate in skin-pass rolling process. In this article, systematical analysis on this field is conducted by combining FEM method and experiments, including wear test, SEM, production real data proving and so on.Firstly, the surface morphology of tinplate substrate has been observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Filter paper test, PHG test and polarization curves test have been adopted to analyze the influence of the surface roughness of tinplate substrate on the coating porosity, finding that the surface roughness of tinplate substrate has an important influence on coating porosity (with the tinplate coating mass of 2.8g/m2) and those with low surface roughness leads to good tin layer with high quality. Secondly, a simulating model of skin-pass rolling has been established by Abaqus, researching on the influence of several vital process parameters, including the surface roughness of the roller, reduction ratio, the radius of roller, lubrication condition, rolling velocity, rolling tension and the surface roughness of plate before skin-pass, on the surface roughness transfer in skin-pass rolling by FEM method. The effect laws has been successfully gained, as well as the effect degree. Besides, with the methods of experiments and production real data validation, the research on the decline law of the roller’s surface roughness during skin-pass rolling process has been conducted and the prediction generally agrees with the production real data. In the end, control technology of tinplate substrate’s surface morphology has been established and the established technical schedule can be applied to production practice.
