Columns are used widely in industry, while there are many foaming phenomenen existing in the columns which have a great bad effect. The directed seive tray hydraulic performance and mass transfer efficiency were tested respectively in the foaming and non-foaming system. The foaming system is based on air-lauryl sodium sulfate solution and the non-foaming system is air-water. The directed seive tray test was carryed on in a rectangular tower and the hydraulic characters including dry plate pressure, wet plate pressure, entrainments rates and leakage rates and the mass transfer efficiency were tested. The effects of hydraulic performance and the mass transfer efficiency with the change of liquid flow, outlet weir height, plate space and hole kinetic factor were discussed and summarized. The different effects on the directed seive tray between the non-foaming system and foaming system are discussed. The sulfur recovery unit tower was simulated and calculated using Aspen Plus. The tower internals were designed using the directed seive tray with the law in experiment data. The data shows that the foaming system has a great influence on the directed seive tray properties. It can increase the plate pressure and leakage rates and decrease the operating flexibility. The experiment behaviour and results can be helpful in the application of the directed seive tray in the foaming system.
