Safety glass which has excellent impact resistance properties, as well as has excellent optical properties is widely used in the area of transportation, construction, finance and so on. In recent years, with the people’s own security awareness continues to improve, and lightweight, safe trend of key parts in automotive, construction and other industries,Glass/PU(polyurethane)/PC(polycarbonate) safety glass which has a light weight and good optical mechanical properties and high impact toughness, has become the first choice for people of safety glass material in the future. But, there are still some problems in the practical application and production processes. Since there is a big difference of properties between glass and PC and adhesion of the intermediate layer is lower, the edge unglued phenomenon will occur in both of the production process and using process. Response to these problems, in this paper, it enhances the adhesive strength between the inorganic and organic layer by surface modification of TPU and substrate and do research on effect of surface modification and compound process of properties of the safety glass. The main works are as follows:(1) Surface modification of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) using in the safety glass. After modified by the silane coupling agent, a small amount of Si-O-Si bond and a polar group urea bonds generated on the surface, surface morphology of the film becomes irregular, surface roughness of the film is increased, surface water contact angle of the film has a more significant decrease. Further, surface activity, visible light transmittance and thermal stability of the modified TPU film was improved. Adhesive properties of the modified TPU film has improved. When the hydrolysis time of coupling agent solution is 8h, sonication time was 5 minutes, the result was the best. The adhesive strength of the modified TPU between the safety glass compound interlayer was increased from 2.02 MPa up to 5.63 MPa, increased by 180%.(2) Surface modification and strengthening of safety glass substrate and the study of adhesive properties. The flexural strength of glass increases after surface hardening treatment, and the result of ion-exchange is better than of the physical strengthen. The surface of glass shows a uniform rough surface after ion-exchange, and there also is a slight decrease in visible light transmittance. After modification, the surface roughness of PC increases, surface water contact angle is decreased, surface activity is enhanced. The visible light transmittance has a downward trend. Surface strengthen of glass, surface modification of TPU and PC are conducive to the adhesive strength between the safety glass compound interlayer. The results of the optimal combination of compound has been obtained by optimizing the structure, namely glass after surface strengthening, TPU film(TPU8h5min) and PC(60℃ 5mol/LNaOH lh).(3) Optimization of complex process and performance of safety glass. The visible light transmittance of composite safety glass has a smaller decline after surface strengthen of glass and surface modification of PC, by about 2% to 4%. Surface modification of TPU has little influence on it. Surface strengthening of glass has almost no influence on the heat resistance of safety glass, and surface modification of PC and PU8h5 film is in favor of it. The yellowing aging phenomenon on the composite safety glass is not obvious after ultraviolet irradiation, but the light transmittance has a smaller decline, about 2~5%. Surface modification of TPU film is beneficial to its UV resistance. Research of the impact test shows that, different structures of composite safety glass are in line with national public safety industry standard A type technical requirements. The conforming thickness of safety glass down to around 4mm. The adhesive strength between the glass and the PC has enhanced after surface modification of TPU film is beneficial on the impact strength of safety glass.
