Ever since the 21st century, with the rapid development of science and technology and constant progress of the society, modern design is also becoming increasingly diversified following the pace of the times. However, with the vigorous development of the packaging industry, the issue of permanent garbage produced by unrecoverable materials, non-degradable composite materials and excessive packaging is becoming increasingly serious. Especially, the pressure of wastes produced by food packaging that cannot be separated from our daily life is extremely prominent, bring serious harm to our living environment and breaking the long-term balance between man and nature.Aiming at the ever increasingly serious pollution issue and according to the environmental development roads taken by developed countries, this paper proposes solutions to existing problems of food packaging in China, i.e., green design of food packaging, which is explained and elaborated on from both internal and external factors of food packaging. In terms of internal factors, this paper starts from the 3R1D design principle to analyze the convenience of making food packaging green according to the lightweight principle, recycle principle, recycle principle and degradation principle on reducing the amount of wastes and the living environment. In terms of external factors, this paper explains this from the printing process, visual elements and humane consideration, proposing to avoid printing hazards as much as possible in terms of printing process, and proving that how environmental friendly the oil and printing techniques determines the ecological enforceability of the packaging to a great extent. In terms of visual elements, this paper explains the function of green design from logo, graphics, text and color so as to make it have stronger aesthetic functions, communication function and emotional rendering function. As a product of human thought, green design not only shows the progress of human civilization, but also indicates the importance and urgency of environmental issues. Good design should not only take into account the immediate interests, but its design concept should be to design for the future while adhering to the design concept of sustainable development and regarding humans as a part of the environment.
