This paper introduces the separation principle and development trend of heavy medium cyclone, details of the concentric double overflow pipe heavy medium cyclone, multi cone angle cyclone and large cone angle high density separator heavy medium cyclone separation principle and structural characteristics. On this basis, combined concentric double overflow pipe dense medium cyclone, multi cone angle cyclone and large cone angle high density dense medium cyclone separation principle, a novel single three-product dense medium cyclone. And the principle of separation of the single three-product dense medium cyclone has made the preliminary analysis and discussion. Using particle image velocimetry (PIV) on the internal flow field of single three-product dense medium cyclone were measured, especially the internal fluid tangential velocity, radial velocity and axial velocity distribution. According to the single three-product dense medium cyclone separation principle and internal flow field distribution characteristics, design of the single three-product dense medium cyclone structural parameters for the experiment with coal and the experimentation system is established. The separation efficiency of two different of coal samples on the single three-product dense medium cyclone was studied.The results show that the flow field analysis:Cyclone model internal fluid can be generated the within spiral flow and outer helical spiral flow, in the space of near the conical section, three velocity peak is produced around the axis. The radial velocity distribution is not obvious of the fluid inside the cyclone model, the symmetry inferior in Sec conical section, in a section of the conical and cylindrical section have certain symmetry.Experimental studies have shown that:The single three-product dense medium cyclone enables achieve purpose of the single cylinder cone structure sorted three different quality of the product; In the structural parameters of the cyclone prototype, by adjusting the operating parameters, the secondary cyclone actual separation density is higher than the firstly. For coal sample 1,the outer overflow pipe actual separation density is1.55g/cm3, Ep value is 0.06. the inner overflow pipe actual separation density is 1.66g/cm3, Ep value is 0.1. For coal sample 2, the outer overflow pipe actual separation density is 1.50g/cm3, Ep value is 0.07. the inner overflow pipe actual separation density is 1.67g/cm3, Ep value is 0.105.
