With Chinese economic development, the demand for oil and gas is on the increase, the relationship of domestic supply and demand relationship has become strained. So, Sinopec actively explore overseas markets. 2007, Shengli Petroleum Administration win the EPC project in Mexico. The depth of reservoir is 350-600 m, relatively shallow, easy to drill. In the EPC project, the horizontal well whose dogleg is 10-30°/30 m, belongs to the medium-short radius horizontal well. In the project construction process, the nitrogen need to be filled in drilling fluid. The conventional measuring instruments that it transmit signal by mud pulse can’t be used. Therefore, the electromagnetic MWD is chosen on the field construction.In consideration of the typical that in the project EPC in Mexico, the horizontal wells have big dogleg, are underbalanced drilled with nitrogen, this article deals with Medium-short radius horizontal well directional drilling technology Study in the project. Based on the study of the structure, working conditions, deflection of positive displacement mud motor, the positive displacement mud motor that it can do big dogleg and rotary drilling is chosen. By analysis signal transmission of measuring instrument, prefer suitable for injection of nitrogen underbalanced drilling electromagnetic measuring instruments, and research it, produce electromagnetic measurement techniques. By the study of landing control, analysis on entering the target, horizontal segment control of the medium-short radius horizontal well, the trajectory control technology is come into being. The above technology integration, produce the sets of directional drilling technology that is suitable for medium-short radius horizontal wells, underbalanced drilling. From the beginning of the project to now, the construction results of more than one hundred of wells show that reducing tripping times, accelerating drilling speed, shorting the drilling cycle, to obtain the desired economic benefits and good result.
