With the wide use of high efficient coal mining technology, long distance, high efficiency, high speed and large capacity are the main development direction of belt conveyor. As an important component of belt conveyor, the tension device is directly related to the safe operation and the life of belt. Because there are many disadvantages of the traditional tension device such as low respond velocity, inability of automatic adjustment of the tension force, it can not meet the requirement of the belt conveyor. Therefore, to research on the dynamic characteristics of tension device and to improve its performance is very important, and it is also necessary to develop a fast dynamic response, high safety coefficient automatic tension device.Through the analysis for the characteristics and development of the traditional tension device at home and abroad, combined with the design highlights, installation location of tension device and dynamic tension under different conditions, proposed a design scheme of hydraulic automatic tension device, and designed the hydraulic part and electrical control part of the tension device. In the hydraulic system, the working principle is introduced and some main parts of hydraulic system are selected. In the electrical control system, the PLC control program is designed and the software of STEP 7-Micro/WIN32 is used to simulate the control program. The simulation software of MATLAB/SIMULINK is used to build the simulation model. PID controller is designed to correct the system, and the response curves are got before and after PID correction and are analyzed comparatively. The simulation results show that PID controller improves the control perforrmance of the tension device, so that the system has faster response speed, high control accuracy and better stability.The feasibility of the device is testified theoretically in this paper. The tension device has many advantages such as rapid response, strong adaptability, convenient control and high safety and reliability, overcomes the drawbacks of the traditional tension device, prolongs the life of the belt, improves work efficiency and does some basic work for the development of the new automatic tension device.
