The continuous bends generally exist in the natural rivers. As a result of the circumfluence influence and the restrict of the bends configuration, it is more difficult for the ship navigation in the bends than in the strainght sea-route. So there is a little hidden trouble for the ship navigation in the bends. Along with the more attention on the water transportation industry, the request for the waterway scale and the navigation condition is higher and higher. The route improvement for the bend which was researched few in the past is taken more and more attention by the society and department responsible for the work. For understanding and solving the navigation condition and the route improvement problems, the article discussed the width and widening value for the safe navigation in continual bends.Combined the flow test and barge model test in the generalized consecutive bends, the navigation condition for self-propelled barge in 1000t channel(Ⅲlevel) was researched by the generalized barge model test in the consecutive bends. The drift angle and drift sideway of the barge when it passed the generalized consecutive bends down the center line. And the correlative width of th manoeuvring lane and the additional width. The relation between the fluent condition and the curve central angle was analysed and a relational formula in reference to drift angle and the additional width was proposed. Some following conclusions was got by the theoretical analysis and the experimental data:The drift angle and sideway and the width of the manoeuvring lane increase along with the increase of the water depth, the speed of flow and the central angle increase as the barge pass downstream the bends. And the water depth affacted most, and the speed of flow taked second place, and central angle least. But the water depth, the speed of flow and the central angle hardly affacted the three values as the barge pass against the current but the drift angle and the width of the manoeuvring lane reduces a little as the increase of the speed of flow. The value of the drift angle and sideway and the width of the manoeuvring lane when the barge pass downstream the bends is bigger than it against the current. And along with the increase in the depth and the speed of flow, the difference was more bigger between downstream and pass against; In one bend, the drift angle in the after bend was bigger the front bend. The width of the bend (ⅢThe level) is 60m, but it can not satisfy the request for ships safe navigation. So the additional width is needed. The value of the additional width for the front bend is 28.2m~79.1m along with the fluent condition’s change while it is 40.4m~80.5m for the after bend. Generally speaking, the width of the bend and corresponding additional width increased as the the water depth, the speed of flow and central angle incresed. When the speed of flow is invariable and the water depth increases, the width of the bend and corresponding additional width in the after bend is bigger than in the front bend.Hower, when the water depth is invariable and the speed of flow increases, the values in the after bend was same as the front bend.
