Nowadays, urbanization in China has been improving rapidly. Along withtheories such as urban transportation priority and TOD theory slowly filtering intopeople’s minds, lots of cities in our country are gradually entering the peak period ofrail transit construction, including the city of Nanchang. As one of the importantresource of urban development, rail transit construction actually has quite a largedriving force to the underground space development and the compact and walkingsystem of the urban areas. If the overall planning is in a planned way, the influenceof the rail transit will be linked to the development of the city and form an integraldevelopment. This paper targets at a three-dimensional public space design by selecting themajor rail station districts as the objective. First, it investigates into the influences ofrail transit construction upon the city and the three-dimensional trend of public spacein urban areas as well as relevant theories that give rise to this trend. Then it probesinto related theories that combine transit station with urban public space, on the basisof which it discusses how the three-dimensional public space system of transitstation domains comes into being and how it is interwoven with all elements in theurban area. Finally, the system will be applied to the three-dimensional public spacedesign of three transit station districts along Zhongshan Road in the city ofNanchang to see whether it is possible and practicable.
