Rail transit is an important part of urban infrastructure and an important mode of urban public transportation with the characteristics of high volume, fast speed, convenient to take and no traffic jam. The construction of rail transit is in an amazing speed in most of Chinese large cities recently, especially the capital cities. Rail transit stations are often key public space for the crowd's contact and interaction, such as response to traffic distribution. The entrances/exits of rail transit stations usually connect to multiple types of public space and realize the transition of people efficiently in urban space. There are many problems about the joint between the entrances/exits and the urban public space, for example unmet needs of traffic distribution and lack of activities. This paper chooses the public space surrounding rail transit stations as the object of study, especially Wuhan metro line 2 as an example which is the first subway line across the Yangtze river, the golden corridor which connects Hankou's and Wuchang's many different kinds of urban areas. According to the quality of urban areas where the 21 stations connect to, the urban areas are divided into 4classes: business class(Jianghan Road station, 4 stations, etc), residential class(Jiyuqiao station, 5 stations, etc), recombination class(Zhongshan Park station, 9 stations, etc) and the other class(Fanhu station, 3 stations, etc). This paper chooses the stations which have the largest flow of people and the most abundant activities from every class to do the detail study: Jianghan Road station from business class, Jiyuqiao station from residential class, Zhongshan Park station and Optics Valley Square station from recombination class.According to < Research of Informal Public Space Based on Spatial Behavior and the Use>, to study the correlation of static space and dynamic behavior, analyze every station from the point of space and activities. The research of public space includes adjacent urban elements, relationship of site entrances, space characteristics. The research of public activities includes the flow path, the condition of retention and the degree of participation.By analyzing the relationship between public space and activities, this paper puts forward some suggestions about designing public space surrounding rail transit stations.
