With excellent aerodynamic performance, parafoil has been widely used. But the research aboutparafoil is less than the research about ballistic-type parachute which is represented by roundparachute. The theoretical research about parafoil is mainly focused on the aerodynamic performancecalculation, flight characteristics research and homing trajectory control. The parafoil structure isgreatly simplified in aerodynamic performance calculation, which is very different with actualsituation. What’more, the design and theoretical research of high glide ratio parafoil are blank in thedomestic.Based on the design goal of high glide ratio parafoil and extensive literature research, the airfoilwhich is most important parts that affects the aerodynamic performance of parafoil is selected. Thenumerical analysis of parafoil aerodynamic performance is conducted. The aerodynamiccharacteristics of basic airfoil at different attack angles are studied using this method. The accuracy ofnumerical method and the sensitivity of mesh and flow field are investigated. The redesign plan ofthis airfoil is proposed, and the optimal dimensional parameters of leading edge cut of this airfoil isdetermined by numerical method.According to the actual requirement, the specific structural design of canopy shape, canopy area,line, control line, triangular tape and stable tape is conducted. Numerical calculation of this parafoilbased on CFD method is conducted, the surrounding and internal flow field of parafoil and canopysurface pressure distribution at different attack angles are studied; the influence of bulge shape inaerodynamic performance is studied, and effective aerodynamic data is obtained. The generalrelationship between parafoil shape and aerodynamic parameters is summarized and the variationrules are studied.Finally, the model of parafoil designed in this paper is tested in throw tests and wind tunnel tests.In the throw tests good gliding performance and inflation of this parafoil are observed; in the windtunnel tests the deployment process of the parafoil is studied, the force and moment of each axis undercertain attack angle are obtained, and the vertical and lateral stability are tested.
