In this paper, the main research object is a new type of elastic safety wheel. Firstly, this new typeelastic safety wheel’s finite element model was established. Then it was analyzed by nonlinear finiteelement method, and the characteristics analysis of mechanical transmission for this new type elasticsafety wheel was carried out by mechanical theory and ADAMS software. Finally, based on theseqential quadratic programming(SQP) algorithm, the structure of the wheel was optimized.At first, the basic structures, working principle and advantages of the new type elastic safetywheel were elaborated. And the structure of this elastic wheel was simplified. Then, its geometricmodel was established by CATIA. The finite element mesh division, material property sets and otherpreprocessing work by HyperMesh software were performed. So the new type elastic safety wheel’sfinite element model was established completely. Besides, nonlinear static analysis and modalanalysis were analyzed under different conditions. And modal characteristics based on groundconstraints, material characteristics.After then, Based on the loading experiments, the wheel’s structural deformation was presentedin braking and driving conditions. Next, theoretical study and simulation analysis on characteristicsanalysis of mechanical transmission was conducted under these two kinds of conditions. Then therelationships of mechanical transmission was obtained. These relationships showed that the newwheel had effective mechanical transmission characteristics to ensure normal driving of a car. Theanalysis has laid the foundation for further research of the new type elastic safety wheel.At last, According to the characteristics of the structural optimization problems, the strategywhich took the length of each wheel rib as the design variables and radial stiffness as optimizationobjective was proposed. The structure of the new type wheel was optimized by SQP algorithm andverified by finite element analysis method before and after optimization. The result showed that theoptimization could increase the radical stiffness of the wheel effectively. Besides that, the researchcould offer the thesis reference on the multi-objective and constrained problems.
