Study On The Spatial Characteristics Of The Old Town Of Jinan

The study on urban space is a significant foundation to rediscover thecharacteristics of cities, simultaneously leading cities to develop healthily. Under thecircumstance of the burgeoning urban modernization, the conjuncture of urbanspatial characteristics is becoming increasingly severe. Jinan, the Spring City, withthe fame of its history and culture, draws the public concern and worry for its fadingold-town characteristics.As the impress left by the different time frames, the old town, generally, has itsdistinct features, which is on behalf of the city’s peculiar style. Given all this, thisthesis historically analyzes the evolution of the urban morphology and spatialstructure in Jinan. Meanwhile from three perspectives of urban space, alley spaceand architectural space, the thesis analyzes the characteristics of the old-town urbanspace. Via the abundant field researches and analyzing the questionnaires, this thesis,probing into the objectification of the urban spatial characteristics, finds out theissues of the urban construction and traditional urban area protection, and finallyoffers a preliminary proposal to remodeling the old-town spatial characteristics.This thesis includes six chapters. Chapter1, Introduction, is mainly about thedefinitions of urban characteristics, and gives a clear overall introduction to thedevelopment of the domestic and the foreign studies on the urban spatial form andcharacteristic. Meanwhile, this portion is also mentioned the research backgroundand research scheme. Via the research on four portions, the urban axis of “mountains,rivers, lakes, town, mountains”, the evolution of,“Great Rivers” and “HighMounts”, the urban form and spatial construction, the region constitution affected bythe “rivers,lakes and springs” and the citizens’ cognitions of urban spatial aestheticfeatures.Chapter2, within the scope of city, analyzes the old-town spatial arrangementfeatures, combining the mountains, springs, lakes, rivers and town, five parts as awhole in Jinan. Chapter3, within the scope of region, from multi-aspects, thesymbiotic relationship among the springs, alleys and blocks, the alley level enriched by the flows, and the joint, mainly analyzes the well-preserved blocks in old town,which is as graceful as the regions south of the Yangtze River, due to the spatialfeatures of their bridges, streams and houses. Chapter4, within the scope ofarchitecture, researches on the flat shape, spatial sequence construction, detailedfeatures and materials of the old-town courtyards. This portion, using thearea-line-point analysis method, states the features of the historical old-townarchitectures, in order to collect sufficient data to preserve and repair in future.Chapter5is states the reasons of remodeling the old-town urban spatialcharacteristics from three aspects, the city, street and construction. Finally thischapter probes into a preliminary scheme of the remodeling direction and method.This thesis devotes more to the prophase investigations, analyses and research ofthe remodeling.
