Polymer modified asphalt has concerned more and more attention in recent years,especially on the construction of the highways. The nature of the asphalt and indicatorschanged greatly when it is added with polymer, such as the penetration, softening point,ductility and so on Polymer modified asphalt improve the performance of asphalt,making it more suitable for completed environment and road traffic conditions, and hasmade great contribution to the national economy. However, in many places, the crackwas found soon after the highway had been paved. At the same time, rainwater flowsinto crack, leading to destruction of the road and reduce the safety of traffic. Therefore,my essay plan to add a new polymer in asphalt to improve the mechanical properties ofasphalt mixtures, especially fatigue performance, hoping to solve the road cracksproblem. In this paper, the main include the following parts:①In this paper, we choose Chongqing expressway as the research background,select the appropriate asphalt and add polymer to make polymer modifiedasphalt②Firstly, we check asphalt’s penetration, softening point and ductility to makesure it compliance with standards. Then we add different proportions ofpolymer to modify asphalt and test the performance of modified asphalt tomake sure whether it is useful.③We test asphalt’s penetration, softening point before and after added polymer,and select the appropriate adding polymer ratio.④Use the polymer modified bitumen to make asphalt mixture specimenproduction, testing physical and mechanical properties of asphalt, etc., to findout the best asphalt-aggregate ratio.⑤Do fatigue testing with polymer modified asphalt mixture, and verify whetherthe polymer modified asphalt mixture can meet the needs of completedenvironmental and road conditions.The test results showed that polymer modified asphalt improves the asphaltsoftening point and high-temperature performance while penetration and ductility hasdecreased to some extent; Polymer modified asphalt mixture had a better mix ruttingresistance, improved flexural strength and splitting tensile strength, and fatigue properties.
