Amidst rapid urban development in China, landscape and architecture are growingprominently. As the feature of a city, landscape and architecture leap to one’s eyes in thefirst place when one tries to know about the city. However, many cities lost theirself-owned features during the process of development. Coming instead are variousmodern elements and western design philosophies. Most cities tend to look alike, depriving themselves of landscape recognition function. As a result, attention-catchingproblems emerge: city eco-integrity is stained, culture strays away from its origin andhistorical sites are vanishing from our eyesight. Facing problems as those, people beginto realize the importance of regional characteristics in modern landscape design. Themost imperative and vital task in modern urban development is how to effectivelyutilize local natural resources, regional culture, humanistic environment and the historyof its architectural context for the benefit of landscape design. Waterfront landscape cancontribute to a better and more integrated feature of a city. Therefore, this dissertation isdirected at combining architectural context with waterfront landscape design to inheritlocal cultural distinctness and foster regional cultural characteristics. Regionalitydenotes landscape commonality in a region within a time range due to the influence ofvarious elements such as local culture and history, yet this commonality distinguishesitself from that in other regions. Natural environment and historical and culturaltraditions compose regionality. To be specific, it includes weather, landform, hydrogeology, animal resources, historical and cultural resources, people’s life style andbehavioral pattern.
