Currently the higher reliability and lifetime is required in aircraft manufacturing, but aircraftperformance is largely affected by drilling and riveting process. Now most of the countries whichpossess advanced aviation manufacturing technology use automatic drilling and riveting machines toguarantee the quality of the aircraft structure connection. However in China the study on theapplication of automatic drilling and riveting technology is still in its infancy. Based on UMACcontroller, focusing on automatic control system suitable for drilling and riveting machines, our mainwork and research are as follows:1. The control system framework of the drilling and riveting machine which developedindependently by the research group is designed. The technical difficulties of the traditional aircraftskin assembly methods are analyzed and its control process is designed. The structure of the controlsystem is presented in open control mode based on the mechanical structure of the automatic drillingand riveting machine.2. Based on the motion model and control process, the motion control algorithms of theautomatic drilling and riveting machine is designed. The kinematic model and error model areestablished based on the theory of advanced spatial mechanism, and the motion compensation schemeis figured out. The normal data of the holes that are drilled is analyzed on the basis of the detectionsystem. And the motion control algorithm of the automatic drilling and riveting machine is proposed.Then combined with kinematic simulation analysis the reliability of the control algorithm is verified.3. The UMAC controller is used to design and validate the control system of the automaticdrilling and riveting machine. On the application of UMAC controller, the initial variables are set andthe corresponding PID parameters are adjusted. Then combined with the motion control algorithm thecontrol system of the automatic drilling and riveting machine is designed. Finally the control systemsimulation software is used to verify the stability of the control system.Our designed open control system of the automatic drilling and riveting machine is capable tosatisfy the control requirement of the automatic drilling and riveting machine, which provides atechnical basis to some extent to help to China develop and produce the automatic drilling andriveting machines independently.
