Silicone oil fan clutch is a new kind of transmission device using viscous shearing forceof silicone oil to transfer torque, which is widely used in engine cooling systems. Comparedwith the traditional cooling fan, it can regulate fan speed according to the coolingrequirements, which can make the engine work under the best working temperature. Theperformance of silicone oil fan clutch is measured by slip and thermal performance, due toonly a few people doing the related research so it has practical significance to carry out theresearch on slip and thermal performance of the silicone oil fan clutch.Firstly, the structure and working principle of different kinds of silicone oil fan clutchesare introduced. And the development and research status of silicone oil fan clutches at homeand abroad are introduced.Secondly, the working medium of silicone oil fan clutch (silicone oil) is introduced indetail. The14800cP and8000cP silicone oil are measured according to the instrumentspecification. The viscosity-temperature indexes are obtained from the experimental datafitted by exponential model.Thirdly, a silicone oil fan clutch with double grooves is taken as a studying example foranalyzing its slip and thermal performance. Modeling of the silicone-oil fan clutch is carriedout by considering the viscosity change with different radius, and the clutch slip and theclutch surface temperatures with the change of input speeds are calculated with the proposedmodel.Finally, the relations of the clutch slip and clutch surface temperatures with the change ofthe input speed are measured. Comparisons between the calculations and experiments validatethe model. The slip and thermal performances for other6silicone-oil fan clutches arecalculated with the proposed model and the calculation results are compared with theexperimental results. The calculation model is reasonable and a practical calculation programof silicone oil fan clutch performance is developed. The database of the calculation programcan be updated according to requirement.Based on the basis of previous research of other people, much deeper research on the slipand thermal performance of silicone oil fan clutch is carried out. A practical calculationprogram is compiled and a test rig which can quantify the energy consumption of differentkinds of engine fan drives is built. They can shorten the development cycle of the silicone oilfan clutches and save costs. The research has an important value in engineering application.
